Racek malý (Larus minutus) je pták menší než holub domácí. Je podobný jako racek chechtavý, na rozdíl od kterého je menší, černá kapuce dosahuje až k týlu. Zobák je červenohnědý a nohy jsou rumělkově červené. V prostém šatě má hlavu bílou s šedým temenem a skvrnou u ucha.Mladí jedinci mají záda a křídla černohnědá a černou koncovou pásku na ocase. V letu mává křídly rychleji než racek chechavý a má spodní stranu křídel tmavou.
Hlas - ozývá se málo a potichu „kekekek kejkej“.
Hnízdění - hnízdí v malých koloniích na zarostlých jezerech a rybnících severovýchodní Evropy, na tahu se v malých početch objevuje i ve střední Evropě. Hnízdí v květnu až červnu jednou ročně. Hnízdo je kupa rostlinného materiálu.
Samice snáší 2 - 3 olivově zelená hnědě skvrnitá vejce na kterých sedí oba rodiče asi 21 - 23 dní a mláďata poté krmí oba rodiče asi 25 dnů.
Potrava - především hmyz.
Racek malý je částečně tažný pták (severské populace), na hnízdiště se vrací v dubnu a odlétá v září až listopadu.
