Tipologia di auto a 2 porte, tetto fisso e volume della parte posteriore (quella dietro i due sedili anteriori) inferiore ai 934.6 litri di volume totale. Se tale volume è superiore, si parlerà di berlina a 2 porte. Le coupé sono molto spesso auto sportive che hanno 2 o 2+2 posti, intendendo con 2+2 la presenza di due sedili posteriori di dimensioni ridotte e quindi in grado di fornire ai passeggeri un minore confort rispetto a quelli anteriori.

Per berlina si intende il tipo di carrozzeria d'autovettura, classicamente a 3 volumi, atta a trasportare 4 o 5 passeggeri.

Viene chiamata Sedan in inglese (viene usato a volte anche il termine Saloon), Limousine in tedesco e Berline in francese, riprendendo in tutti i casi i nomi dai mezzi di trasporto del passato in cui in questo modo venivano chiamati gli abitacoli delle carrozze a cavalli o delle portantine.
Per quanto riguarda la storia automobilistica fin dall'inizio questo termine è stato usato per quel tipo di carrozzeria, completamente chiusa, in cui l'abitacolo è distinto dal cofano anteriore contenente, di solito, il motore e dal bagagliaio posteriore.
Un'altra caratteristica distintiva della berlina è l'altezza interna dell'abitacolo che consente una comodità e una possibilità maggiore di movimento per i passeggeri rispetto ad esempio ad una coupé.

Solo in tempi recenti si è assistito ad una nuova generazione di vetture a 2 volumi, definite anch'esse berlina in italiano, ma che assumono la denominazione di Hatchback in inglese, in cui il bagagliaio ha un portellone anziché il solito cofano ed è raggiungibile anche dall'abitacolo. La conformazione esterna, che mantiene in ogni caso una tendenza cuneiforme, non consente di raggiungere i volumi di carico concessi da una classica station wagon o, ancor più, da una monovolume.
L'abitacolo può avere indifferentemente 2 o 4 porte in base alla classe e alla lunghezza del veicolo.

The Elfstedentocht, or Eleven-cities Tour is a speed skating competition and leisure skating tour held irregularly in the province of Friesland, Netherlands.
